How Do I Build a Lead Magnet That Delivers Automatically?

A lead magnet is something valuable you give away for free in exchange for an email address. A PDF guide, a checklist, a template, a mini-course, a free tool. You have probably downloaded one yourself. The reason every marketing person keeps recommending them is that they work: they convert visitors into subscribers at a much higher rate than a generic “join my newsletter” prompt. The part most non-technical founders get stuck on is the delivery: how does the thing actually get sent to someone automatically when they sign up? Here is exactly how to set it up.

What You Need to Build

A lead magnet delivery system has three components:

The lead magnet itself. A PDF, a Google Doc link, a Notion template, a video, a checklist. Whatever delivers the promised value.

A sign-up form. Where people enter their email address to get the lead magnet.

An automated email. Sent immediately after sign-up containing access to the lead magnet.

That is it. Once set up, it runs indefinitely without any manual work.

Step 1: Create Your Lead Magnet

The best lead magnets are specific and immediately useful. Not “The Ultimate Guide to Marketing” but “The 10-Minute Client Onboarding Checklist for Freelancers.”

The faster someone can get value from it, the better it converts.

Format options:

  • PDF (professional, easy to download)
  • Google Doc or Notion page (easy to update and always current)
  • Short video recording (higher perceived value)
  • Template (Notion, spreadsheet, or document they can copy)

Ask your AI: “Can you help me create a [PDF checklist / template / guide] on [your topic] that would be valuable to [your target audience]? Make it immediately actionable and concise.”

Step 2: Create the Sign-Up Form

Easiest route: Gumroad

Gumroad lets you offer a free product in exchange for an email. Upload your PDF or link, set the price to free, share the product link. When someone gets it, Gumroad captures their email and adds them to your audience. No additional tools needed.

Most control: your own form plus an email service

If you want the form on your own website and branded email, use Tally or your existing form tool plus Mailchimp, Loops, or Kit (formerly ConvertKit).

Create a form with an email field. When someone submits, the email service automatically sends the lead magnet delivery email.

Step 3: Set Up the Automated Delivery Email

This email goes out immediately after sign-up. It should:

  • Be sent within seconds of the form submission
  • Deliver the lead magnet clearly (a download button or a direct link)
  • Set expectations about what they will hear from you next
  • Be short

In Mailchimp: create an automation, set the trigger to “new subscriber joins this list,” write the email, add the link to your lead magnet, publish.

In Loops: create a new loop triggered on sign-up, write the email, publish.

Ask your AI: “Can you write a lead magnet delivery email for my [type of lead magnet] about [topic]? It should thank them for signing up, deliver the lead magnet clearly with a link or download button, and mention what they can expect to receive from me going forward. Keep it under 150 words.”

Connecting Your Form to Your Email List

If your sign-up form and email service are different tools, connect them with Zapier.

Zapier trigger: Tally New Submission (or Typeform, Google Forms, etc.) Zapier action: Mailchimp Add Subscriber (or Loops, Kit)

This moves the email address from the form into your email list automatically, which triggers the delivery email.

The One Thing to Remember

A lead magnet delivery system needs three things: the lead magnet itself, a sign-up form, and an automated email that delivers it immediately. Gumroad handles all three for free if you want the simplest path. For more control, combine Tally for the form with Mailchimp or Loops for the automated delivery email, connected by Zapier.
